My Favorite Adoption Book Reviews of 2009

Last year, I wrote about my favorite books I reviewed in 2008. Here are favorites from the children’s adoption books I’ve reviewed this year. (These are books which I’ve reviewed here in the Adoption Blog in 2009. They may have been published in prior years.) In My Heart, by Molly Bang, is a wonderful book for any child. It’s a story of her mother telling her child that throughout the various activities of their separate days, he is always in her heart—and his parents, friends and teachers are in his heart too. The child pictured looks Indian or Latino and … Continue reading

My Favorite Book Reviews of 2008

Most of my readers won’t be surprised to learn that I love to read—kids’ books, adult books, nonfiction, picture books—anything. But even I was surprised to learn that I’ve reviewed over 45 books this year. Since many bookstores have post-holiday sales, and since many of us were fortunate enough to receive bookstore gift cards, I’m challenging myself to pick my favorite “top twelve” of the adoption books I’ve reviewed this year. I began the year by starting a series: Adoption Books with Great Art. Although I’m a “word person”, I’ve become increasingly moved by the beautiful ways some artists can … Continue reading

Scrapbooking Week in Review for April 1-6, 2008 with a Few Extras

I don’t know what it was like for you in your neck of the woods this past weekend, but our area was absolutely beautiful and was the closest resemblance to Spring that we’ve had since last year. We got some flowers planted, grass seed poured and enjoyed the outdoors as much as we could. Days like those are hard to find to scrapbook, because you want to enjoy the weather, but you can always do it at night or early in the morning. Remember to make time for it, while still enjoying the beautiful weather. Here is what has been … Continue reading

Book Awards: The Whitneys

As you browse your library or bookstore, you’ll see various logos on the covers of the books – winner of the Caldecott, winner of the Newbury, winner of the Christy – the list is endless. Jaime Egan did a marvelous series on the Caldecott Medal and another on the Newbury last year, and I thought it would be interesting to take a look at other awards that are available in the literary world. That way, when you see one of those logos, you’ll know why that book is being honored and what made it so special. I’m going to start … Continue reading

How Well Do You Know Your Spouse? – A Quiz

I’m back with some more questions that’ll let you test how well you know your spouse. See how many of these you know right off the top of your head. And for those you don’t…“You’re welcome.” What’s that about? Because I just gave you something to talk to your spouse about this weekend. The Spouse Quiz 1. Do you know if they have a favorite color? If you answered yes, do you know what it is? 2. When was the last time your spouse ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? (Do they even like them? I always forget Wayne doesn’t…until … Continue reading

Summer Movie Dates With the Kids

This summer, movie theaters are offering all sorts of deals for kids’ movies shown usually on Tuesday or Wednesday morning. They are usually older movies, but kids don’t care. If their favorite characters are on the big screen, they are happy. At 10am on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Regal Entertainment Group is offering a Free Family Film Festival. For nine weeks, families can attend free G and PG movies like Shrek the Third, The Bee, and Charlotte’s Web. The website lists each theater’s schedule. The festival starts June 10, 2008. Bookworm Wednesdays starts up on June 25th at the National Amusement … Continue reading

More Free Movie Tickets, Part 2

Every kid loves to go to the movies. Whether their choice movie for the summer is Incredible Hulk, Batman, or Wall-E, they will have fun at the movies. In Part 1 of Free Tickets, Anyone?, I shared several promotions from different corporations including Hershey Chocolate, Publix, and Redbook. Here are a few more ways to rake in the free tickets. Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Tom Thumb, Pak n Save, Randalls, Dominick’s, and Genuardi’s are offering 2 free tickets to any movie, when customers purchase $40 in participating products in a single transaction with your club card. The list of eligible products … Continue reading

All it Takes is a Word

Writers are a helpful bunch of people. On Tuesday I found a lovely review of ‘Kaleidoscope,’ my collection of poems, at Aussie Reviews. That review along with a great review on the same site of my children’s book, ‘Karaoke Kate,’ boosted my spirits, the same way comments from some of you here at families.com do. Then today, another writer passed on a response she saw to my children’s story. ‘Dad likes to Cook’ appeared last month in Countdown, one of four magazines put out monthly by School Magazine here in New South Wales. The May magazine contained not only the … Continue reading

A Small Gift With a Big Impact

Christmas shopping this year was made a little easier. Along with the gifts bought for family and friends, I included for each person a copy of ‘The Singing Silence’ by Anne Hamilton. Earlier this year I felt privileged to have been asked to edit this book. It’s only a little book but it packs a great wallop. It is filled with interesting detail and information. I was blown away by what I read. You can read a review of it up on my ‘Write and Read with Dale’ blog or under non fiction at Aussie Reviews-a great site that reviews … Continue reading
